What age is the Director looking for the most?

The director is mainly looking youth actors ages of 9 and 18. All auditionee’s must turn 9 prior to January 12, 2008 to be eligible to audition.

How many people will be cast?

At best guess ...  a cast of 8 to 30 performers. The roles of BFG, Sophie, and the Giants will likely be single cast; members of the Chorus/Ensemble may be double cast and will likely portray multiple roles.

I might miss EIGHT days of school (or work) to perform?

If you are cast as the BFG, Sophie, or one of the Giants, Yes.  Ideally actors would perform every day and would miss eight days. The director would prefer not to double cast the mentioned central roles but knows that some roles in the Chorus/Ensemble may have to be and consequently some students would only miss 4 days of school. There will be a place on the audition form for you to indicate whether you can miss 8 or 4 days. Please check with your employer, principal and/or teachers to ensure that any missed days will be counted as excused absences.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with their school work while performing. Many students attend school prior to or after performing each day to pick up and turn in assignments.

When will we rehearse?

Not every character will be called for every rehearsal, though central characters will attend almost every rehearsal. Most actors will be called at least three days a week from January 20th through February 17th. All actors are called to every rehearsal from February 19 through 26th. ALL CAST MEMBERS MUST BE PRESENT for technical rehearsals February 27th through March 3rd.

What time of day do we rehearse?

Weekday rehearsals will work in no more than a 3 hour block somewhere between 6:00 and 9:30 PM. Saturday or Sunday rehearsals will be in 3-4 hour blocks. Rehearsal times are determined after casting depending on availability.

What if I have conflicts with the rehearsal schedule?

Be prepared to list all activities that might conflict with the rehearsal schedule on your audition form. Please list only those conflicts which cannot be moved or missed. Director’s try to work around scheduling conflicts IF THEY ARE LISTED on the audition form. It is very difficult to adjust for conflicts after the rehearsal schedule is set. Technical rehearsals begin February 26th through March 1st. ALL cast members MUST attend every technical rehearsal. NO absences are permitted

If I am cast, what do I need to provide?

Actors are required to provide appropriate shoes, socks and underwear and all make-up supplies as determined by the costume designer. Make-up kits run $15 to $30. For this show, you may be asked to provide some appropriate clothing from your own wardrobe at home depending on the time period in which we set our play (which is still in great discussion among the creative design team).

Technical Positions

If you are age 15 or over technical positions are available for this production. We are in need of an Assistant Stage Manager, Props Master, Lighting and Sound Operator. Please visit the Discovery Technical Position page to find out specifics. We do ask all cast members over the age of 15 to participate in strike following the final performance.

How are parents involved?

It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure their child arrives and departs in a timely fashion from all scheduled activities. In addition, we ask parents to volunteer a minimum of six hours. These volunteers may help with cast crowd control, front door duty, make-up application, or ushering for performances to name just a few. We are searching for the right person to be our volunteer coordinator. Is it you? Add that to your child’s audition form.

When are callbacks?

Thursday, January 17, 2008 from 6 to 9:30 PM.

Do I attend callbacks?

To find out, call the audition hotline (254-4546 x310) after 12 PM Wednesday January 16, 2008 and follow the instructions. If you have e-mail we’ll try to notify you electronically.

How do I know if I am cast?

Call the audition hotline (254-4546 x310) after 5 PM Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Even if you were not on the callback list you need to call and listen to the final cast list -- sometimes the director does not need a second look at you [a callback].
