Tips
and FAQs for
Discovery
Show Auditions
How
do I get the most current audition information?
Right here on the web is the most detailed information. Click
around in the discovery section to see all the available
opportunities. You may also call
the Discovery audition hot line at 254-4546 extension 310. It
changes on a per show basis to give you up to the moment
information.

How many Discovery productions does LCT do in a year?
Currently three of
our nine productions are
Discovery shows. Some years
will have four (it depends n the calendar). Additionally,
students and community adults are encouraged to participate in
our
Summer Family Musical.
Does LCT ever use students in Main Stage Pro shows?
Some seasons there are
opportunities for students to participate in
Main Stage
productions ... which means they rehearse and perform on the
same schedule as our professional actors. Those opportunities
will also be listed on the discovery audition page. Depending on
the rehearsal and performance schedules students involved in
Main Stage productions may need to set up alternative education
options (unless students are home schooled which usually has
more flexible hours). Main Stage pro shows usually have at least
some rehearsals during school hours.

Who comes to auditions?
It
depends on the shows. We usually look for students and adults
ages 9 to 99 to play a wide variety of roles. Each audition
announcement will have complete descriptions of cast
requirements. You must have turned whatever the minimum age for
the show is by callbacks to be eligible to
audition.

Should
my Mom or Dad attend auditions with me?
We strongly suggest that ALL students have a parent attend
auditions with them for at least the first 30 minutes, during
this time we clearly outline all commitments for you and your
child. Students ages 9 to 12 are required to bring a parent for
at least the first 30 minutes. Parents are welcome to stay the
entire time if they so choose.
I'm an
adult. Do I need my Mom or Dad to attend?
Adults and college students need not bring a parent but should
bring their calendars. Information sheets will be included as to
whether a show is a volunteer position, stipend position or part
of a long- or short-term contract.

I've
never had a class at LCT, may I audition?
Yes,
you may audition. Taking a class at LCT is not a prerequisite to
auditioning. Auditions are open to any and all, though more
often than not students who are cast in Discovery and Main Stage
subscription series shows have had some form of training at one
time or another either from LCT or another institution.
Do I really
need an audition appointment?
Yes. To attend an
audition you must pre-arrange an appointment. That way we know
how many scripts to prepare for a given day. Some directors even
split up days according to age groups.
How do I make an
audition appointment?
Call the Discovery
hotline 859-254-4546 ext 310. You leave the required information
and an LCT representative will call you back to confirm your
appointment.
What information do I leave on the Discovery Audition Hotline?
The name of an adult we can call to
schedule the appointment.
A daytime phone number (9AM to 5 PM)
for that adult.
The name and age of any children
auditioning.
Any other information that is
described on the hotline for a particular production.
What do I wear to
auditions?
Wear
comfortable clothing that allows you to move without risk of
embarrassment, but does not mask the size and shape of your
body. If you are called back it is a good idea to wear the same
clothing you wore on the day of the audition.
What do I bring to
auditions?
All
auditionees should bring a pen or pencil, and some “quiet”
activity (homework or books are highly recommended as the
process can be a lot of hurry up and wait) and don’t forget
your $1.00 for your photo. If you are a student you should bring
a parent.
Do I have to have a resume?
No. But if you're
serious about this business and have been in several productions
or taken several classes you should create one. Bringing it with
you will mean it takes you less time to fill out your audition
form.
What will I do at auditions?
When
you arrive at the theatre you will go to the check-in desk and
receive an information sheet and an audition form. The
information sheet contains as much specific information as can
be determined prior to auditions... every possible rehearsal
date available, parental commitment, costume requirements, our
general policies, etc. You’ll fill out the audition form
(front AND back please) in your best handwriting then have your picture
taken, (Don’t forget to bring $1 to pay for the picture) and
when your form is completely filled out you’ll turn it in.
During the actual audition you may play some improvisational
games and or/ you may be asked to read from the script.
It’s
best to think that you are auditioning at all times from the
moment you walk in the door until you leave the building. We do
watch how you behave while waiting, while standing in line,
while others are performing... all of these things tell us how
you will behave during the rehearsal and performance process.

What is on the audition
form?
The front has
your vital statistics so we know how to get hold of you (and
your parents), your availability for callbacks and rehearsals, a
space for listing conflicts, a photo waiver, and a place to
indicate the maximum number of school days you (and your
teacher) think you can miss.
The back of
the audition form is a place to list your theatre experiences,
training and special talents. Resumes are encouraged but not
required.
There
is a space for your mugshot. They will be taken that day by LCT
staff. A photo is mandatory, no substitutes. With the number of
people coming through the door it is important that your picture
is of you, in the clothes that you wore to the audition that
day.
You mean I miss school or work to do
this?
Weekdays we perform for schools that
are bussed in to our facility. Performers are on-site from 9:00
AM until 1:30 PM on these days. Many students attend school
prior to arrival or after performing, depending on their
particular school’s schedule. It is always a good idea to check
with teachers,
principals and employers about the maximum number of days you can miss.
Students should also check to see whether they will be counted as excused absences or not.
Show information should include the number of school performance
days. Most Discovery Productions have a total of six week day performances,
actors must be available all six if they are cast.

What about
activities I've already scheduled? Scouting, piano, out of
town weddings and the like?
On
the audition form there is a place to list conflicts. Directors
do their best to honor these conflicts so that you may keep up
your regularly scheduled activities, but remember they juggle
the schedules of up to 30 people. There may be occasions where
you have to skip or reschedule something. All actors must be
present at every tech rehearsal whether they are double cast or
not.
What is double casting?
2
students attend rehearsals and learn all the lines and blocking
for a role and then alternate performance days.

What is
the director looking for at auditions?
The director is trying to evaluate; your vocal qualities (pitch, placement, articulation and
projection); your movement abilities (do you stand like a stick
and read or do you perform the stage directions indicated in
your script?); your sense of focus and your imagination and
creativity (are you aware of the audience or do you create a
reality on-stage, what are you doing to portray character?) and
last but not least your expressiveness (is it in your words?
your face? your body?). THEN we look at things like height,
weight and hair color to think about what role you might fit
into and which of the other people that auditioned might match
up with you. The same criterion is true for callbacks.
What is
a callback?
It’s
a director’s second look at you and your skills. Especially
with the number of people that we will see at these auditions,
it is often important to bring back some people for a “second
look”. Just because you are not called back does not
necessarily mean you were not cast. You may have been perfect
for the role the director is using you for and consequently does
not need a second look at you. Or if the Director knows your
skills very well (perhaps you were in a show with them
previously) they may have chosen to see only people with whom
they were less familiar to call back.
How do I find out if I need to come
to callbacks?
Call
extension 310 (usually) after noon the last day of auditions and
follow any instructions provided.
I didn't get called back; does
that mean I'm not cast?
No.
You may still be very much in consideration for a role. It just
means the director did not need to see you a second time.
Everyone who auditions needs to call to hear the cast list after
the posted time. You’ll call the hotline twice. Once to see if
you’ve been called back, and again after callbacks to see who
was cast.
How do I find out if I
am cast?
Call
254 4546 extension 310 on the date specified on the info sheet
you receive at auditions. Usually that date is 7 days
after callbacks. This hotline will also let
you know when the first rehearsal will be and what you might
need to bring. The recording should also tell you when the next
auditions are (if we know the dates already.)
If I
am cast what is the rehearsal schedule like?
Most directors rehearse
five days a week for a six week period. The actual dates and
times are determined by the schedules of those who audition. For
the first 4 weeks a rehearsal schedule usually includes 3
weeknights and one weekend afternoon. The last two weeks before
opening usually rehearse 4 weekday evenings and both weekend
afternoons. A tentative rehearsal schedule is provided for you
at auditions.
