LCT Associate Artistic Director Jeremy Kisling will direct. Anne Meacham, LCT’s Production Stage Manager will Stage Manage.
Prior to or during auditions if you have a question about any part of the audition, rehearsal or performance aspect of this show, ask Ms. Anne. Reach her by phone at 859-254-4546 or via email (with no spaces) at: ameacham @ lctonstage . org
Audition dates
Monday, April 25th from 6:00-8:00 PM
Tuesday, April 26th from 2:00-4:00 PM
Auditionees must attend the entire two hour block.
All performers must turn 9 prior to April 25th, 2011 to be eligible to audition.
Where and when does the show perform?
The Boxcar Children performs on LCT's Main Stage October 16-24 for weekday and weekend performances.
The weekend performances are:
Sunday, October 16 @ 2:00 pm
Saturday, October 22 @ 2:00 and 7:00 pm
Sunday, October 23 @ 2:00 pm
The weekday performances are:
October 17 – 21 and 24 @ 10:00 and 11:45 AM
In addition, performers must be available for occasional regional performances October 27 through November 18. This schedule is still to be determined. We’ll travel to Morehead, Middlesboro, Hazard, Madisonville, Frankfort and Henderson, among others
I might miss TWELVE to EIGHTEEN days of school to perform?
Yes. We currently know that there are six weekday performances on LCT's Main Stage and we have booked an additional six weekdays of performance in regional locations throughout the state. We continue to look into booking this show in other regional sites hence the reason for missing up to eighteen days.
Though the adult actors travel with the show for both the load in days AND performance days when on regionals - students only attend on the performance days. This helps keep the number of missed days to a minimum.
How many people will be cast and what ages?
For this production, we need 4 actors between the ages of 9 and 18. A sample list of available roles and their suggested ages is available 3 questions down. Ideally the show will be cast discreetly with none of the roles being doublecast.
All performers must turn 9 prior to April 25th, 2011 to be eligible to audition.
What role is perfect for me?
We recommend reading the PERUSAL SCRIPT available in the box office. But please keep in mind the role you think is perfect for you may not be the role the director chooses to challenge you with.
What does a director look for at auditions?
The director evaluates: your vocal qualities (pitch, placement, articulation and projection); your movement abilities (do you stand like a stick and read or do you perform the stage directions indicated in your script?); your sense of focus and your imagination and creativity (are you aware of the audience or do you create a reality on-stage, what are you doing to portray character?) and last but not least your expressiveness (is it in your words? your face? your body?). THEN we look at things like height, weight and hair color to think about what role you might fit into and which of the other people that auditioned might match up with you.
What roles are available in the cast of characters?
PLEASE NOTE: Characters, genders, and ages may be adjusted depending upon who auditions. Much will depend on who auditions and how things shake out.

Do I have to have an appointment to audition?
Yes. It helps the stage manager know how many scripts to have prepared and enables the director to gauge the best use of time.

If I am cast what is the rehearsal schedule like?
Rehearsals will be September 19 through October 15, 2011. We are looking for students available to rehearse and perform on the same schedule as our professional company. Rehearsal blocks are usually 3 to 4 hours long and fall between 9:00 AM and 10 PM six days a week. Actual time frames will depend upon student availability. A tentative rehearsal schedule on which you can indicate your preferred rehearsal blocks is provided in the audition packet.
Estimated time commitment for rehearsal:
Sept 19 - 24 and Sept 26 - October 1 approximately 20 hours
October 3 - 8 and 10 - 15 approximately 40 hours
(OR depending on student schedules we may choose to even it out and average 30 hours each week)
What if I have conflicts with the rehearsal schedule?
A tentative rehearsal calendar is provided in your audition packet so that you can list all activities that conflict with the rehearsal schedule, especially those which cannot be moved or missed. Director’s do their best to honor scheduling conflicts IF THEY ARE LISTED on the tentative rehearsal calendar in your packet. It is very difficult to adjust for conflicts after the rehearsal schedule is set. Remember directors juggle the schedules of up to 30 people. There may be occasions where you have to skip or reschedule something.
What do I do before auditions?
Once your appointment has been arranged you'll receive an Audition Packet. Download, print out and complete the papers in your audition packet (in your best handwriting) and READ the information sheet. The information sheet contains as much specific information as can be determined prior to auditions... every possible rehearsal date available, parental commitment, costume requirements, our general policies, etc. If time permits you'll also want to read the perusal script or the source material.
What do I wear to auditions?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move without risk of embarrassment, but does not mask the size and shape of your body.
What do I bring to auditions?
Your completed audition packet ... which means the audition form (front and back).
The tentative rehearsal schedule with any possible conflict dates listed.
$1.00 for your photo.
Students MUST bring a parent for the first 20 minutes while we go over some main stage / regional logistics.
What is on the audition form?
The front has your vital statistics so we know how to get hold of you (and your parents), your availability for callbacks and rehearsals, a space for listing conflicts and a photo waiver.
The back of the audition form is a place to list your theatre experiences, training and special talents. Resumes are encouraged but not required.
There is a space for your photo. They will be taken that day by LCT staff. A photo is mandatory, no substitutes. With the number of people coming through the door it is important that your picture is of you, in the clothes that you wore to the audition that day.
Do I have to have a resume?
No. But if you're serious about this business and have been in several productions or taken several classes you should create one. We'll be glad to attach it to your audition form on the day of your audition.
What will I do at auditions?
When you arrive at the theatre go to the check-in desk. If you have not already you will receive an audition packet and be asked to fill it out. We'll collect your $1.00 photo fee; you'll have your picture taken and turn in your forms. During the actual audition you'll participate in warm-ups, improvisational games and/or you may be asked to read from the script.
There will be a brief meeting with students and their parents before we move to the actual auditioning - which will include warm ups, cold readings and improvisation.
It’s best to think that you are auditioning at all times from the moment you walk in the door until you leave the building. We do watch how you behave while waiting, while standing in line, while others are performing... all of these things tell us how you will behave during the rehearsal and performance process.
When are callbacks?
The director does not currently foresee a need for callbacks. If they become necessary they are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 28th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
What is a callback and do I attend?
A callback is a director’s second look at you and your skills. If we hold callbacks Anne Meacham will contact you and let you know whether you need to attend or not.
When will you announce the cast?
The target announcement date and time is 5 PM Monday, May 2, 2011.
The time above is a target date, but casting may take a little longer than expected. Why so long between callbacks and announcement? So that the director can finalize plans with the creative design team and think through all of the logistics of the production.
How do I know if I am cast or not?
Anne Maecham will end an email to all auditionees informing them of the final cast list.
If I am cast, what do I need to provide?
Actors are required to provide appropriate shoes, socks and underwear and all make-up supplies as determined by the costume designer. Make-up kits run $15 to $30. Dress or dance shoes may run between $20 and $60 dollars.
How are parents involved?
It is their responsibility to ensure the child arrives and departs in a timely fashion for all scheduled activities. Parents are not required to volunteer their time as ushers or backstage parents — though offers will not be refused.
Parents of the student cast accompany us to regional performances so as to be chaperones for the student actors. We would prefer that two parents travel with us to each location if at all possible (one parent for each gender). A schedule will be determined after casting. If it turns out that NO parent is available for a regional date, an LCT cast member will be assigned and parents must sign a waiver of agreement.
These auditions are complete and the show is already in rehearsal.
Check back later for future Main Stage Professional productions which involve students.
