I might miss EIGHT days of school (or work) to perform?
Yes. Ideally actors would perform every day and would miss eight days. The Director would prefer discreet casting, however, she will consider double casting. There is a place on the audition form to indicate whether you are available for 8 or 4 school day performances. Please check with your (employer) principal, and/or teachers PRIOR to auditioning so as to ensure whether you can miss 8 or 4 days AND that any missed days will be counted as excused. Some schools require you to complete an Academic Arts Enhancement form as well.
Students are expected to keep up with their school work. Many students attend school prior to or after performances to pick up and turn in work.
If you are a parent auditioning with your child we will ensure that you perform on the same days as your child.
What is double casting?
Two students attend rehearsals and learn all the lines and blocking for a role and then alternate performance days.
Discreet casting means that one actor learns all the lines and blocking (usually without understudies.)
The show has flexible casting requirements. It can be accomplished with as few as 9 and as many as we want. We are looking to cast approximately 24 to 30 cast members of varying ages and skills. We need actors and singers and drummers and dancers and movers and puppeteers and gymnasts. Is that you? Then audition!
A sample list of available roles and their suggested ages is available 3 questions down.
All performers must turn 9 prior to September 13th, 2010 to be eligible to audition.
We recommend reading the PERUSAL SCRIPT available in the box office. But please keep in mind the role you think is perfect for you may not be the role the director chooses to challenge you with.
The director evaluates: your vocal qualities (pitch, placement, articulation and projection); your movement abilities (do you stand like a stick and read or do you perform the stage directions indicated in your script?); your sense of focus and your imagination and creativity (are you aware of the audience or do you create a reality on-stage, what are you doing to portray character?) and last but not least your expressiveness (is it in your words? your face? your body?). THEN we look at things like height, weight and hair color to think about what role you might fit into and which of the other people that auditioned might match up with you. The same criterion is true for callbacks.
For this production we will also be looking at your movement skills, ability to "play well with others", creativity of your ideas and choices as well as watching puppetry and manipulation potentials.
PLEASE NOTE: Characters, genders, and ages may be adjusted depending upon who auditions. Some characters may double. Much will depend on who auditions and how things shake out.

Do I have to have an appointment to audition?
Yes. It helps the stage manager know how many scripts to have prepared and enables the director to gauge the best use of time.
Click here for instructions on how to arrange your audition appointment.
If I am cast what is the rehearsal schedule like?
Most directors rehearse five days a week for a six week period. Not all acotrs are called for every rehearsal. The actual dates and times are determined by the schedules of those who audition. For the first 4 weeks a rehearsal schedule usually includes 2 to 3 weeknights and one weekend afternoon. The last two weeks before opening usually rehearse 4 weekday evenings and both weekend afternoons. A tentative rehearsal schedule (with EVERY available date) is provided for you at auditions.
The number of rehearsals you attend depends on your role. Atreyu and the chorus (and possibly Bastian) will be called for almost every rehearsal. Other characters should plan on two to three nights a week and at least one weekend day for the early section of rehearsals.
What dates are rehearsals?
Initial rehearsals and exploration begin the week of October 5, 2010
Step it up rehearsals begin November 1, 2010
Runthroughs begin November 15, 2010
Technical rehearsals begin November 29, 2010
Most actors will be called at least three days a week from October 5th through November 22nd. All actors are called to every rehearsal from November 22nd on. There will be no rehearsal November 24, 25 or 26 so that cast members may gather with their families. There WILL be rehearsal Saturday and Sunday November 27 and 28.
ALL cast members MUST attend every technical rehearsal, November 29 through December 6. NO absences are permitted during this time period.
What time of day are rehearsals?
Weekday rehearsals will work in no more than a 4 hour block somewhere between 6:00 and 10:00 PM. Saturday or Sunday rehearsals will be in 4-6 hour blocks. Rehearsal times are determined after casting depending on availability.
What if I have conflicts with the rehearsal schedule?
A tentative rehearsal calendar is provided in your audition packet so that you can list all activities that conflict with the rehearsal schedule, especially those which cannot be moved or missed. Director’s do their best to honor scheduling conflicts IF THEY ARE LISTED on the tentative rehearsal calendar in your packet. It is very difficult to adjust for conflicts after the rehearsal schedule is set. Remember directors juggle the schedules of up to 30 people. There may be occasions where you have to skip or reschedule something.
Once your appointment has been arranged you'll receive an Audition Packet. Download, print out and complete the papers in your audition packet (in your best handwriting) and READ the information sheet. The information sheet contains as much specific information as can be determined prior to auditions... every possible rehearsal date available, parental commitment, costume requirements, our general policies, etc. If time permits you'll also want to read the perusal script or the source material.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move without risk of embarrassment, but does not mask the size and shape of your body. If you are called back it is a good idea to wear the same clothing you wore on the day of your audition.
Your completed audition packet ... audition form (front and back)
The tentative rehearsal schedule with any possible conflict dates listed.
$1.00 for your photo
You might also want to bring a “quiet” activity (homework or books are highly recommended as the process can be a lot of hurry up and wait).
If you are a student you should bring a parent for the first 20 minutes while we go over some logistics. Especially if this is your first time auditioning -- bring a parent!
NOTE: Ms. Viv is an open door director. Any parent who wishes to watch auditions is welcome... as long as your child is also in agreement. Please know that students are supervised the entire audition time frame should a parent choose not to stay.
The front has your vital statistics so we know how to get hold of you (and your parents), your availability for callbacks and rehearsals, a space for listing conflicts and a photo waiver.
The back of the audition form is a place to list your theatre experiences, training and special talents. Resumes are encouraged but not required.
There is a space for your photo. They will be taken that day by LCT staff. A photo is mandatory, no substitutes. With the number of people coming through the door it is important that your picture is of you, in the clothes that you wore to the audition that day.
No. But if you're serious about this business and have been in several productions or taken several classes you should create one. We'll be glad to attach it to your audition form on the day of your audition.
When you arrive at the theatre go to the check-in desk. If you have not already you will receive an audition packet and be asked to fill it out. We'll collect your $1.00 photo fee; you'll have your picture taken and turn in your forms. During the actual audition you'll participate in warm-ups, improvisational games and/or you may be asked to read from the script.
It’s best to think that you are auditioning at all times from the moment you walk in the door until you leave the building. We do watch how you behave while waiting, while standing in line, while others are performing... all of these things tell us how you will behave during the rehearsal and performance process.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday September 13, 14 and 15, 2010.
We'll start no earlier than 6:00 PM and end no later than 10:00 PM. The actual time (and what we explore each night) will be determined once we know the number of folks called back.
What is a callback?
It’s a director’s second look at you and your skills. Especially with the number of people that we will see at these auditions, it is often important to bring back some people for a “second look”. Just because you are not called back does not necessarily mean you were not cast. You may have been perfect for the role the director is using you for and consequently does not need a second look at you. Or if the Director knows your skills very well (perhaps you were in a show with them previously) they may have chosen to see only people with whom they were less familiar to call back.
To find out, call the audition hotline (254-4546 x310) after 12 PM Monday September 13th, 2010 and follow the instructions. If you have e-mail, we’ll try to notify you electronically.
No. You may still be very much in consideration for a role. It just means the director did not need to see you a second time. Everyone who auditions needs to call to hear the cast list after the posted time. You’ll call the hotline twice. Once to see if you’ve been called back, and again after callbacks to see who was cast.
The target announcement date and time is 5 PM Monday, September 20th, 2010.
The time above is a target date, but casting may take a little longer than expected. Why so long between callbacks and announcement? So that the director can finalize plans with the creative design team and think through all of the logistics of the production.
How do I know if I am cast?
Call the audition hotline (254-4546 x310). In addition to the cast list the hotline will also let you know when the first rehearsal will be and what you might need to bring. The recording should also tell you when the next auditions are (if we know the dates already.)
Actors are required to provide appropriate shoes, socks and underwear and all make-up supplies as determined by the costume designer. Make-up kits run $15 to $30. Dress or dance shoes may run between $20 and $60 dollars.
Since this production also has some contemporary dress characters actors may be asked to bring items from home.
The chorus may be asked to provide tights and leotards or other dancewear.
It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure their child arrives and departs in a timely fashion from all scheduled activities. In addition, we ask parents to volunteer a minimum of six hours. These volunteers may help with cast crowd control, front door duty, make-up application, or ushering for performances - just to name just a few. We are searching for the right person to be our volunteer coordinator. Is it you? Be sure to mention your interest to the stage manager or add that tidbit to your child’s audition form.
