Training the Young Actor Many actors and theatre artists call the art of acting a craft or a skill. In order to develop a skill or a talent you must practice. After all, no one sits at a piano for the first time and plays a Chopin cantata. The craft of acting is very much like learning to play the piano. It cannot be learned in a day, a week, or even a month. Most actors consider developing their craft a life long process. There are always new techniques to learn in order to improve an actor’s instrument: the body, voice and personal creativity.

The mission of the Lexington Children’s Theatre Education Department is to provide students of all ages with the means to actively explore the beauty, diversity, complexity and challenges of the world around them through the dramatic process. We strive for our students to develop their own unique creative voice, imagination and understanding of drama’s role in society.

The educators and staff at LCT work to achieve this mission through offering classes that aim to develop the individual student’s skills. In addition, we provide opportunities for young artists to showcase their talents through performance experience. The classes offered during the season are considered developmental classes. These classes focus on cultivating the necessary skills required to succeed as an actor. Actors must first have basic training in using their voices and body. On a more advanced level, they must learn how to develop a comprehensive character, as well as create and live in the world of a play. Finally, they must constantly find ways to challenge themselves and grow as artists. These are the goals our classes work to meet.

We at LCT hope to meet these goals in ways that are fun and challenging for every student. It is through our skill developing classes that we can help turn a young artist into a gifted and compelling actor. If you are ready for a challenge please join us and Imagine That!!!
