Ira and Esther Hirsch arrive in Revelation Falls, Vermont to an icy reception.

Harvey Pettibone tries to persuade Merlin Van Tornhout to join the Klan.

Leanora Sutter nearly comes to blows with Merlin Van Tornhout and Willie Pettibone over an advertisement in the newspaper.

Leanora dances separate and yet unified with the other girls in town as everyone gathers for the recital.

Ira Hirsch talks to Esther about right and wrong while Sara Chickering realizes that though Jewish, a different religion than she practices, their differences are not so great and their humanity is just as touching.

Leanora Sutter left the school house "without even a coat she was so mad" on a cold February day winding up in Sarah Chickering's home. Watching Esther care for Leanora, Sarah notes that their shadows on the wall are all the same color.

Reynard Alexander, the local newspaper reporter reads his weekly editorial to Merlin -- posing the question of what it means to be 100% American. Ira reads the same article to himself as Leanora reads it aloud to her blind mentor Mr. Fields.

The Klansmen gather on the hill above town while the people on the green enjoy an outdoor concert. All is interrupted when the Klan lights a cross on the hillside and we share the reactions of each character.

Harvey Pettibone hands Merlin a can of rat poison and tells him to pour it in the Sutter's well ... if he wants to remain in good standing with the Klan.
