How do we select a season?

We start by attempting to achieve a "balanced season" ...

How many tour shows? How many Main Stage? How many Discovery productions? Do we have something for intermediate grades? for primary grades? Something that appeals to all ages? Do we have a contemporary play? A classic? A historical piece? Any on social awareness?  Are there any significant upcoming events we need to celebrate?

Most of the time audience feedback influences a decision ...

Look ... based on a 1 to 5 scale (with 5 as good) this title consistently comes in at least 4. we need to see if we can find a way to do it.

Or sometimes we're influenced by a colleague in the field ...

You need to read this script! We did it and the audience was blown away!

But eventually it comes down to three things.

1. Are the scripts good works?

2. Are they within our means and resources?

3. Will they present creative challenges to staff and audience alike?

THEN ... We begin contacting publishers to ensure we can perform the productions when and where we want...

That show can't tour ... another company is already doing it. This show is not available -- it's tied up in movie rights ... How can we afford that royalty fee?!

Sometimes you're tossed back to the drawing board to start all over again.

We can't get rights for (insert title here) .. let's see ... that means we could swap this title to (insert new title) then this one changes to (insert yet another title.) It's a good thing we've got a long list of titles we want to accomplish!

Eventually we acquire rights for all nine plays and then we share them with you!

Here's what we're reading, considering and thinking about for the future.
